Before assuming you need a brand new key, work through these causes in order, starting with the simplest and least expensive fix.

1. Dead Coin Battery: Most fobs use a small CR2032 or CR2025 coin cell battery. This is by far the most common cause of a fob that suddenly stops responding, and it is also the cheapest to rule out first.
2. Desynchronized Key Programming: A weak or recently disconnected car battery can occasionally cause the vehicle’s system to lose track of a fob’s rolling code, especially after a jump start or battery replacement. This usually shows up as a fob that unlocks the door inconsistently or not at all, even with a fresh battery inside.
3. Worn Internal Button Contacts: The rubber buttons on a fob sit over small conductive pads that degrade with years of daily presses. When these wear out, pressing the button physically works but no longer reliably completes the circuit.
4. Physical Damage or Moisture Exposure: A dropped fob, a fob that went through the wash, or one left in direct sun on a dashboard for years can develop cracked solder joints or corrosion on the circuit board that batteries and reprogramming will not fix.
5. Interference or a Vehicle-Side Receiver Issue: Less commonly, aftermarket alarm systems, nearby electronics, or a fault in the vehicle’s own receiver module can block the signal even when the fob itself is working correctly.

Simple Troubleshooting Steps

Start by replacing the battery, since this resolves the large majority of fob complaints on its own. If a fresh battery does not help, try standing closer to the vehicle and pressing the button firmly. If the fob works only when held right against the door handle or start button, that points to weak button contacts or a fading internal battery in a smart key, rather than a dead one.

When to Replace vs. Repair

A fob with worn contacts or a cracked shell can often be repaired or rebuilt rather than replaced outright, which is typically less expensive. A mobile locksmith can diagnose which of the five causes above applies to your specific fob on-site, reprogram it if it has become desynchronized, or cut and program a full replacement if the internal electronics are beyond repair.
